Doctors holding health for ransom

My doctor told me that I need to take my meds every day for the rest of my life, and he at first gave me three refills on my prescriptions. He later reduced it to two, then one, and now zero. If I don't see him every three months I don't get the meds I supposedly need. I think I'll try going without and see if my health deteriorates any. I don't like his forcing me into seeing him more and more often to get what he says I definitely need.

Curious. What type of medication? I see my Dr every three months. But that's because I am diabetic with degraded kidney function. Even at that, my prescriptions are for a year. With the exception of one that my insurance won't allow beyond 6 months.

@SW-User A three month supply is considered unusually short?
SW-User
@HollyW It is in my experience. And I have many years of taking multiple medications. Beyond multiple. 13 pills every morning. 9 every evening. And 3 at bedtime. Of course some of these are 2-3 times daily. One medication prescription length is less than a year. All filled by 3 month supply.
@HollyW Our insurance pushed us to get a three month prescription by mail instead of once a month in person.
There may be a state law that requires him to see you in person. You might be able to get away with missing an appointment occasionally if you call that morning and tell them you tested positive for COVID. But some doctors will refuse to fill the prescription that month.

I can answer your concerns better if i know a bit more,
but generally Your Insurance Wants you to see Doctors every Month, 3 Months, or 6 Months depending upon you Health, as their Mabdate is to help you stay Well as possible, Happy & Healthy.

Some Doctors wiil abuse the System getting as many appointments as allowed by your Health Plan and possible due to scheduling constraints.
Sending you to be checked by other doctors may be to Check Concerns and Keep You Well or to Cover Their Ass so you cant say "I mentioned it, but he did nothing!"

I'll help any way I can.

Hmm. I’ve always had to see my doctor every three months to continue getting my ADD meds. I’ve been told it’s so they know you’re not abusing them.

@Theyitis I think that's a good idea to see the patient regularly. There were some cases in the UK about people getting Valium short-term to help them over a bereavement but they carried on getting repeat prescriptions and no checkups at the doctor and some of them were still taking it for years 😱

Are you sure it's not changes to your insurance policy? They typically declare the amount of refills possible.

Is this a controlled medication? The best I've ever done is 90 days, and that was like heaven. I've been moved back to 30-day requirements, but it's wholly my insurance plan doing it.

If it's your doctor's office, ask why the change. Could be they want to monitor you in person or think patients with unlimited meds don't keep appointments (they don't). There could be a medical reason no one explained to you. Ask, and I'm sure they'll be happy to talk with you. If not, consider a new doctor's office. Good luck.

Do you need to do bloodwork before a refill, to check your condition?

What is the prescription and what is it for ?
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
If only you could go to another doctor.
HollyW · 18-21, F
@MrBrownstone I think I'll look for one.
Amylynne · 26-30, F
instead,, go se another doctor. get that second opinon
I guess it depends on the meds he has you on. I get mine for 5 months to a year. If you feel uncomfortable you should get a new doctor or ask him why you have to see him so often.
HollyW · 18-21, F
@Spoiledbrat They have a standard explanation: "The doctor likes to see his patients every three months".
@HollyW I don't know what your ailment is but there are other doctors. I only see my cardiologist every 6 months.
@HollyW If you're taking a controlled medication, they'll want to see you more often.
ronisme1 · 61-69, M
Yeah, they do that
cycleman · 61-69, M
They need to see you to confirm you are in the right direction with the meds.
Work with them!
HollyW · 18-21, F
@cycleman I no longer trust him. The last time I saw him he sent me for the wrong test, and he's always recommending this and that other doctor so he can get referral fees.
Wantingwidow · 56-60, F
It’s not the Doctors, it’s big pharma
HollyW · 18-21, F
@Wantingwidow How so if he gets paid by the visit?
Wantingwidow · 56-60, F
@HollyW the visit is peanuzts compared to the money pharma makes on their drugs
HollyW · 18-21, F
@Wantingwidow Unless they require the doctor to up-sell their drugs I don't see how that could dictate how often I need to see my doctor.
REMsleep · 41-45, F
If its a controlled substance ( something addictive) then I understand but most physicians give one year on everything else.
I can also understand if your condition is not stable or if your condition requires constant bloodwork to adjust your medication.
Those are the only reasons I can think of besides greed.
HollyW · 18-21, F
@REMsleep Thank you for the possibly useful information.

I can relate completely
