Twenty one years ago today

It’s been 21 years since I had my left hip replaced at 19 years old.

It’s still doing well so far. My Surgeon figured it would only last 10-15 years so it feels like I am living on borrowed time here 😂.

I still deal with all the nerve damage in my leg from the surgery but I am so thankful I had it done.

Still not looking forward to the revision though.

Edit to add why I had it done:

I was born with congenital hip dysplasia which means the hip joint is malformed and doesn’t sit correctly. I was in a fibreglass body cast to try and correct it but mine was very bad.

My leg was also 2 inches shorter so when the surgeon took out by hip he basically yanked on my leg to stretch it out and lengthen it. I have permanent nerve damage that’s very painful because of it.

The surgeon had to lengthen my leg and there was a chance the nerve damage could be permanent and of course for me it was. It’s not his fault though. Now I don’t have to wear a raise in my shoes which I hated so much.

Wow! That is very young to be having that done, but it`s nice it`s lasted this long for you.
Degbeme · 70-79, M
@iamonfire696 Best to keep on top of it.
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@Degbeme I do, I have 8 specialists I see.
Degbeme · 70-79, M
@iamonfire696 They`ll keep you tuned up.
Fullmetal · 46-50, M
Holy shit! That encourages me! I had my right one done 2 months ago, on the list for my left one now!! I'm glad it's lasted you this long!!
My friend had a uncle who has had each hip replaced 3 times, lived to see 100!!
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@Fullmetal So glad I could help you. I hope your recovery is going well too 💖.
SW-User
I’m sorry but I really hope everything works out for you. 😔
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@SW-User Thank you. I have gotten 21 years out of it and I had 2 babies on it so it’s doing pretty good. I know I will need another surgery but I am okay with that. Pain doesn’t scare me.
SW-User
@iamonfire696 well I’m wishing you good luck when you need it replaced the next time. Technology gets better every year and it might work out better than the last time hopefully.
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@SW-User Thank you, I appreciate that 💞
YMITheWayIM · 46-50, M
Technology after 2 decades has improved a lot. So whenever you are ready.
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@YMITheWayIM I don’t want to get it before I need too
Hikingguy · 56-60, M
Thank you for sharing. This sounds tough, but you sound tougher.
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@Hikingguy Thank you
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
Sorry to hear you had those problems, so so happy to hear surgery was able to help and that it's still going so well. And, on the bright side, I'd guess that with each passing year medical techniques get better and better so that if/when you need that "revision" it will probably be more medically sound and longer-lasting than ever.
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@ChipmunkErnie yes you are right. It just gets better as we go on. Thank you 💖
Coralmist · 41-45, F
Do any meds help the nerve pain, like Gabapentin?
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@Coralmist I was on that but I had to take such a high dose of it and it make it so my brain was really foggy. I take another med which helps a bit with that pain.
MellyMel22 · F
You have dealt with so much. I wish it wasn’t true 😞❤️
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@MellyMel22 Thanks lovely 💖
SW-User
I'm coming up 7 years for mine, still good but think I need the other side doing soon. The technology and new materials they use last even longer now I believe, but 21 years is really good. Sorry you have the nerve pain though.
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@SW-User I am sorry to hear that you may need you other hip done but you know how much better it is after you have surgery.
SW-User
@iamonfire696 100%
The operation was fine and I recovered very quickly. No concerns from me if I need the other one done.
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@SW-User I am glad to hear that
SW-User
I can understand that it is better to have had this done than to not have any treatment, but you would think modern medicine could do better. All that pain you have suffered over those years!! It makes me sad for you and angry at the doctors. 😡
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@SW-User the nerve damage wasn’t his fault, that was a risk that I knew could happen and it did because I have shit luck lol.
Azn808 · 31-35, M
Thank you for sharing so much. I'm sorry things worked out the way they did. I'm glad there are some good things that came from this operation and i hope the bad things work themselves out eventually. You're amazing and I'm always here for you!
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@Azn808 Thank you 💜
Justme22 · M
Happy anniversary and for beating their predictions as well. As long as you are still glad, there is no way you can't be happy about that.
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@Justme22 Thank you 💖
Justme22 · M
@iamonfire696 My pleasure you deserve some happiness.
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@Justme22 thank you 💜
Lumberjack70 · 56-60, M
Thank you for sharing this. You’ve been through a lot, far too much. I’m thinking you’re stronger in some ways because of it.

I hope you have a very good week 😊
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@Lumberjack70 Thank you so much for saying that. I hope you have a lovely week 💜
NeoNeo · 46-50, M
This isn't something we hear everyday in our lives from people around us. You've come so far very very brave. Your positivity is an example. I wish you better 🤗🙏
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@NeoNeo Thank you so much for saying that 💖
GovanDUNNY · M
You will be ok they replace hips with local anaesthetic now so you are awake during the operation
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@GovanDUNNY I had a spinal and they gave me something to make me sleepy but k remember hearing the saw. Infant have spinals anymore so I will be put under.
GovanDUNNY · M

iamonfire696 · 41-45, F

Quimliqer · 70-79, M
That’s lots to handle at that age!!
Quimliqer · 70-79, M
@iamonfire696 You’ve had a number since then?
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@Quimliqer yes I have had 7 or 8 surgeries by now. My head hurts and I can’t think but it’s somewhere in that area.
Quimliqer · 70-79, M
@iamonfire696 Take care!
thepreposterouspanda · 36-40, M
My left leg has been acting wonky these past couple days. Think it might be time for a check-up. 😑
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@thepreposterouspanda Every time my hip hurts I get my ass up to my doctor and get an X-ray because I have no idea what it’s supposed to feel like when it starts to wear out but so far it’s been okay.

I hope yours is too 💖
thepreposterouspanda · 36-40, M
@iamonfire696 It's always just the worry of, "Is it muscular? Is it coming loose? Is it infected? Is my brain stuff flaring up again somehow?"

Repeat until physically ill. XD
HannahSky · F
Sounds great for the replacement for you but painful too.
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@HannahSky joint replacement surgery is not fun but when it’s required it makes a big difference.
HannahSky · F
@iamonfire696 I'm glad they have the technology for it. Hopefully you'll be able to keep going on yours a while longer.
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@HannahSky Thank you, I hope so too
GJOFJ3 · 61-69, M

Djac17 · 22-25, M
Damn! I can’t even imagine. Like OUUUCH
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@Djac17 yah, that’s not a fun surgery.
TexChik · F
That surgery has been improved so much.
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@TexChik Yes it has, I have a huge scar from it and now they can do it with a much smaller scar.
LostOrchid · F
I hope you forever do well 🤗
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@LostOrchid Thank you so much 💜
RedBaron · M
Sometimes it takes a lot to be hip! 😂
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@RedBaron That’s funny 🤭
You are one tough cookie!!!
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@ElwoodBlues Thank you 💗
Lostpoet · M
Does it affect your everyday at all?
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@Lostpoet my hip is okay it’s the nerve damage in my leg that I got from the surgery that affects my everyday life.
Icarus16 · 51-55, M
I wish i could help
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@Icarus16 Thank you
Icarus16 · 51-55, M
@iamonfire696 you don’t need to thank me
Lilymoon · F
Wow....why did you need it? And what will the revision be?
Lilymoon · F
@iamonfire696 Damn.... 😞
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@Lilymoon It sucks but that’s life. I am just happy I live in canada and didn’t have to pay for this surgery.
Lilymoon · F
@iamonfire696 Defo... 👌
PirateMonkeyCabinet · 36-40, M
Fingers crossed it will still last you a while, and that when the time comes that the revision will be as smooth as it possibly can be.
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@PirateMonkeyCabinet Thank you. I have bad luck though, if something bad will happen it does.
PirateMonkeyCabinet · 36-40, M
@iamonfire696 Know the feeling. Hope this'll be one of those times where that bad luck doesn't kick in.

@Stereoguy it wasn’t his fault. The leg lengthening needed to be done because I always had to wear a raise in my shoe which sucked. There was a chance that the nerve damage would be permanent and of course it was for me.
