I fall firmly in the camp of we really don't know at all, but it's a little too coincidental that COVID would first appear in the same city where they've been doing gain of function research on coronaviruses.
That said, the first known case originated several miles away from the lab in which that research took place. Considering all that's in-between the lab and the wet market in a super densely populated city, it's kinda weird how isolated the first few cases were to the wet market and not anywhere else.
At this point, I highly doubt we'll ever know for sure, so talking about it is basically just getting political partisans riled up for nothing
