To dye or not to dye...and why??

I've coloured my hair since i was 13. I used to enjoy experimenting with different shades. There were lots of great semi permenant products back then so i was never stuck with a shade for long. Over the years, i've found what i like and in general have stuck with the same colour for the last 20 years or so. Its a tad darkers and redder than my natural shade of mousey brown.
I bumped into a friend today. She said.....'ooh you've coloured yr hair?' 'Yes' i reply ' i only did it yesterday, it will take a day or two to calm down a bit...lol'
She then started to lecture me telling me I should stop colouring it and 'grow old gracefully...stop trying to look younger....it looks harsh and ages you more' she tuts.
Wohoa!! I say ' i colour it coz i like it this colour. I dont do it to look younger or even to hide the grey...i do it simply coz I like it'
'If you say so. You should just embrace the grey. Its incredebly freeing' she replies.

Well!!

Those of you who do colour your hair... what are your reasons for doing so?
Do you intend to stop at any point to 'embrace the grey?? '

Dye it like this, to match your new boots!

@RubySoo

I was looking for a "rainbow garden gnome" to share with you, and stumbled upon this field of gnomes (yet not rainbow). Happy lady!

I’ve consistently gone back and forth between saying
‘I embrace the greys’ and ‘oh hell no! F*€k this shit!’
hahaha

So just do what you like, my friend!! Don’t be bothered by the opinions of others.

(Besides, she sounds a bit condescending, from your description of events!)
RubySoo · 56-60, F
@ImpeccablyImperfect ooh she was! I was far too polite to tell her she looks 20 years older than me.....andvthats nowt to do with her hair!! 😄
Actually, i think i got off lightly. God knows what she thought of my boots!!
Its a wonder i didnt get told those are inappropriate for my age!!

@RubySoo btw I love those boots!!!

I used to bleach my hair, because I read some stupid magazine article which stated that the dark colors, (and my original color was dark brown), were aging. I was also SO stinking tired of having to color my roots.

Once I had bleached it, the ex threw a fit. Told me he ONLY liked brunettes. So of course, that made me angry and stubborn, and I wouldn't have changed it back if you had paid me. Silly me...didn't know that for 25 years the ONLY thing he liked about me was my hair color...🤣🤣🤣

Of course, I left the ex shortly after that, moved to Michigan, and it became very expensively un-doable for me to bleach my hair. I learned of a beauty school in Lansing that would do it cheaply, and I went there, and they FRIED my hair. Took two years for the damage to grow out a bit.

I still didn't want to deal with roots, and I found there were fewer and fewer dark roots among the white ones, so I just decided to color my OWN hair, with various shades of blonde. Gradually the blonde grew lighter and lighter to match my white roots, and then during Covid, I decided to let the white grow out completely. I cut my own damaged ends for three years, and now I have a very nice shoulder length blunt which is completely white...or...as one of my neighbors told me...platinum blonde!!! 🤣🤣🤣

Up to you.
Iv'e gone to more natural browns or lighter auburns, because the bright red did make me look older.
I would embrace the silver or white, but not the grey 🫣, perhaps I am vain, but it's my hair
Degbeme · 70-79, M
@Justmeraeagain I can`t call you red anymore? 🙁
Justmeraeagain · 56-60, F
@Degbeme you can for old times sake🙂
Eh....fuck her .

I love colour . If I had my way I'd have my rainbow hair back in an instant. I felt it was me to a 't'.
But I'm also keen to embrace my grey....if it ever fucking decides to get there.
- I've been stuck in this limbo land of 'dead mouse brown' for YEARS.
I accepted it ....thinking, yeah it'll go grey - it hasn't .
So I finally dyed it - not because I'm trying to look young - but because my colour didn't feel like me.
I never thought once of what others think .
Although I did ask on here and half said leave it it's fine .

Others don't care ....well except maybe nosey, possibly jealous twats who should keep their traps shut 😂

You do you Rube🤗
You've found what you like, you've found your style ....and it damn well suits you .

My wife has just decided to embrace the grey, not sure why. I think whatever you want to do with your hair is up to you.
I’m a bloke who embraces the grey 😀
DrWatson · 70-79, M
@TheSirfurryanimalWales I've tried to embrace the grey, but instead I have embraced the bald!
Degbeme · 70-79, M
I let my genetics colour mine. ;)
AntisocialTroll · 56-60, F
I always used to colour my hair when I was younger, very occasionally I still do but only for a funky colour like blue or purple to cheer myself up.

The older I get the more I worry about what all the chemicals in it might do so I mostly embrace the white hair and think of it as natural highlights.

To be or not to be lol

I support you and your love of coloring. Personally, I love women that color and keep their hair colored over the graying naturally like some old horse (Nag to other's that color). Though I use wigs I love the option of color change and the brightness it brings.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
Why do people insist on changing anything? 🤷🏻‍♂️🤣

Let people do what they want to do is my motto.

Congratulations on doing what you want to do! 😁
Jeephikelove · 46-50, F
I have been colouring mine since I was 17, originally I didn’t like my hair colour, now it’s to keep the grey away.
PirateMonkeyCabinet · 36-40, M
That's a bit of a... "rough" way she presented her opinions. Sounds like "I like things this way, therefore you should like it that way too 'cause one-size-fits-all". Pffft-

Nothing wrong with embracing the grey, and nothing wrong with colouring it.

At the end of the day you're the one who is going to wear your hair everyday, you're the one who'll be looking at that hair in the mirror... whatever makes you happy is the right choice.

I've never dyed my hair, and couldn't personally care less about greying. Just call them "wisdom hair" if it ever pops up. 😂 That said, there have been occasions where I've considered adding a touch of colour, and may yet at some point do. Never been about hiding greys, looking a certain age, or anything. Only ever been about "I'd like a change" and "I like that look".
