It is rare as others said, in Scotland particularly you will see Scottish flags , but UK flags are usually associated with skinheads and white supermacy. As of rn there is a lot of unrest across the UK regarding immigration as well as the prosecution of the protesting of the events in Palestine, and the time of the waving of the uk flag seems rather like a message on their stance regarding those issues than a simple statement of patriotism . Especially for a nation that's built on colonialism
@PepsiColaP finally someone who actually answered the question 😅 thank you.

It's not really a tradition here and the current glut probably has a racist backround, though that will be denied. When I was young, it was very rare to see a flag flying, and normally only on public buildings, or maybe for big royal events.
I lived in Northern Ireland for 11 years, where flags are a big part of ongoing division and unrest. I'd prefer that not to spread.

The problem is that the English St George's flag has become very much associated with the anti immigrant groups and that's increasingly happening with the Union Jack too. I'll be honest if I saw someone walking along the street today waving either I wouldn't immediately consider them showing patriotic ferver but probably an anti immigrant sentiment.

@Spectra (By those--like me--who don't see it as "part of Southern 'culture' "/"part of [their] history".)
I think @PepsiColaP has nailed it. It is being portrayed by advocates as a simple indication of national pride, whilst also being a counter to how Palestine flags and Ukraine flags have been allowed to be put up by protestors against those particular conflicts. But we all know that there is a strong xenophobic vibe behind it. It's like an unspoken truth by many, a very much spoken accusation by those on the left and a smug grin by those on the far right. It's a combination of malicious trolling and the marking of territory.

Two inter-related issues this summer:
(1) Reform UK, a right wing populist party, took control of 10 councils in local elections. Shortly after the national leadership decreed that only two flags could be flown from council buildings . . the Union flag and the St George cross of England (Reform UK has minimal support in Wales or Scotland). This was part of a wider effort to counter "wokeism" in the shires.
(2) Private citizens have seen fit to hang flags from lamp posts and other public infrastructure, and video their "patriotic" endeavours. These have bee largely tolerated by long-suffering and cash-strapoed local authorities, but spray painting red crosses on roads has not been.
In summary, some not very intelligent people seem to have rather too much time on their hands.

The racists ruined the flag for us. I propose we make a new one

@Teggy it's probably trending because the media likes to whip up division. Nobody is banning the flag (I'm left wing and have the flag myself). Nobody hates the flag. Like I said, it's a few racists on social media trying to generate publicity. Most of them post comments full of spelling mistakes and grammatical errors. They're not bright folks and hardly understand their own language. They look for reasons to vilify foreigners and are paranoid about immigrants.
