I wonder if the system can tell the difference between an actual new account vs. an alt of a current poster—or someone who’s already been banned and is trying to come back ?

@bijouxbroussard you would think that the IP would be banned, but there's VPNs and other ways to circumvent that.
@bijouxbroussard IP address will kinda do it. MAC address will for sure.

@bijouxbroussard good point. They must, but do they care about that? They probably like regeneration to perpetuate
conversation. And that's good. Management is trying their best to be part of the solutions. (okay management, I did my bit)

@uncalled4 Also, IP bans can sometimes prevent innocent people from creating new accounts.

@TheDeathOfOzymandiaz I don't think a computer's MAC address is easily accessible on the internet. It's not a part of the HTTP header. You can query the IP address, but not the hardware address of the source.
I could definitely set up a second account on SW by using another VPN address and another email address. I would be assigned a new user ID.
Question is, why would I want to do that?

@bijouxbroussard how do you get banned and are you banished to a lesser site? Is it like Football in the UK where you have the Premier League and then steps down to the not so worthy division? I'm new to all this hierarchy
@helenS You would need to work for the MAC address but it can be done. Depends on how big a plague the person you are trying stop is.

@TheDeathOfOzymandiaz Here's how to spoof a MAC address on an Apple Macintosh and most Linuxes in three easy steps:
ifconfig en0 |grep ether /* get your current MAC addess */
openssl rand -hex 6 | sed 's/\(..\)/\1:/g; s/.$//' /* get new random hex address */
sudo ifconfig en0 ether {newAddress}
Done 😏

You're good. And Linux and IT people will appreciate this. I don't even know how to answer this cel phone. Not that anybody calls
