For users preferring the ⏳ Old Chronological Feed layout: ❓
Are you aware that you can adjust (Customize) you're Post Feeds settings, to have almost the same experience as the Old Feed? (Asking, as we have been seeing users complaining about this for a long time.)
We even made it easy for users to do this:
Home Feed > Customize Feed > Presets > All Users, Time Based
With that setup, you should see even more recent posts (Chronologically) than what is shown in the "New Feed".
(For those who simply wish to see "as many posts as possible" - Your feed content will be more "Random" and Less Relevant, however.)
Users are very free to set this as their "Default" if they wish to, otherwise, it can also be set as their secondary, Custom Feed.
We've done as much as we can to offer users lots of options and flexibility, to see the home feed in a way that is more comfortable to them.
It doesn't seem true that we are "forcing users" to only use the site a certain way, and "not listening to user's concerns".
On the contrary, I'm not aware of any other social networking site that offers users as much control and customization of their own feeds, as we do.
We understand that the feed settings may still be confusing to some, we do have plans to improve ease of use and user control.
It isn't really much like the old feed, but ok. I've had this setting on since I created this account and I still see posts out of order, posts disappearing even though I haven't clicked on them yet, it's not like the old feed. It's "more chronological" than some of the other choices, that's all.
It is still confusing for me, and little chages however i set up my feed. It often looks like my friends havent posted for days, yet it i go to their profile, i find ive missed lots of posts!
I already have the post order set to the far left, time posted. My complaint is that I cannot keep going back and seeing older and older posts. At some point it just keeps showing me ones I have seen before. Why??
@Andrew I have not kept track of the various changes in the feeds but I don't think this is a new issue, no. But I would have hoped that setting the feed to "time posted" would have solved it. I would just like to keep going back and seeing older posts once I've already seen the newer ones.
Not the problem really and that is my main feed setting. It's the missing posts that are the problem which are quite noticeable through several methods.
All posts chronologically is wanted accepting blocks and such. Note I don't block or mute anyone.
Note I just received a PM the other day, by an unknown user, asking how to get all posts. So it's not only just my concern.
@DeWayfarer I understand. As we do have to read and attend to many posts and comments of users, your mention of that link in your post, may have been glossed over at the time we read it.
I can vaguely recall your post, but I'm sure that we did not, in our minds, "Disapprove" of you sharing what you saw as useful advice to users.
Why is it that the chronological - time based option still places posts that are six minutes old under posts that are thirty two minutes old??? I hate math, but, even I know that 6 minutes is more recent than 32 minutes ago.
With that setting in effect, there can still be some slight shifting of post order.
In order to give all users as fair and balanced of an experience as we can, we try to slightly balance exposure for users who may not be very popular, or do not have many friends/connections on SW.
There are several reasons for the slight rebalancing, but for the most part, posts seen in your feed, with that setting on, should be generally chronological.
Giving other less popular users, a more fair and balanced experience on SW (for example), outweighs the inconvenience of having a slight discrepancy away from maintaining a perfectly strict, chronological order, in our view.
We understand that users would all prefer settings that are "most ideal for them", personally,
however, we need to design this site with the general benefit of "Everyone" in mind.
@Andrew Lmao... Given that my block list is much longer than my friends list... I hardly consider myself to be "popular".
A lot of the time, it seems to be the fact that posts have basically been tossed into the air before being stuck in the feed that's annoying people.
Well... that and the fact that the feed is basically staying the same. I get that SW has quiet times - but recently, it's been feeling more like dead times.
This way to much to read! Lol but thanks for all y’all do!
SW-User
Andrew would you consider creating an option where you can simply have all posts in chronological order? The current options you say should show more posts etc but there doesn’t seem to be any setting that simply shows all posts
I've tried these settings, logged out, closed my browser, and logged back in again. The chronology is still all over the place, and who knows how many posts I'm still not seeing?
Sorry, but if you were really listening to the complaints about this, then there would be a setting for 'every post and comment, in strict chronological order'.
The way in which recent changes have been implemented is why I'm no longer paying for VIP. Just sayin'.
@NudasPriest We offer users "Great amounts of Flexibility", with the options we provide.
There aren't any social networking services that will going to show users "Every single post and comment, in Chronological order", unless they intend to remain a very tiny community of ~100 users without growth.
That simply is not a feasible long-term strategy.
We also have a responsibility contain and limit inappropriate content, content that could trigger and affect certain groups of users, content that is inappropriate for minors, and so forth.
We do have the right to make certain decisions pertaining to these issues, for the broader benefit of the community as a whole, even if a few users may not get to have the site exactly the way they would like it to be.
@Andrew OK, so are you saying the algorithm-based feed needed to be brought in due to server/bandwidth constraints as the site grew? If so, I can appreciate and respect that ... though I would have preferred to have that divulged up front.
Chronology should still be possible though, and even easier? And settings should take care of the content?
Also, if you're confident that it's 'just a few users', would you be happy to pin an admin post (for a week) with a vote so we could gauge how many users would like a 'strict chronology' option, and another for 'every post' (even if that isn't feasible anymore)?

I haven't said that, and I'm not sure why that seems implied.
I have explained the reasons for discrepancy in chronological order many times.
I'll requote some of my comments made here:

We already have internal data on what settings users utilize for their feed.
