Why do people just say "hey" in their first message?

Yeah, they really should add a bit more than that. They presumably had a reason for messaging you in the first place, so it would be good if they could say something about that in their initial communication with you.

Say hey back, ask them about their day

I usually say hey because I think of talking online like talking in person. It just seems abrupt not to say hello before jumping into the conversation ... but that's just me :)

They can't be bothered coming up with a topic of conversation they expect you to do it for them........................Not my job, move along, find someone else to bother.
