Do you think community service should be a graduation requirement?

I don't teens are already busy. It has nothing to do with our education. It's hours of our free time taken away.

I think some type of volunteer work for teens is good. Like someone mentioned, one day a week. And if it is at an organization, that can be added on a resume as Volunteer Work/ Experience. Especially if the teen doesn't have or has never had a job. I had to work since the age of 16 and I wish I had to do volunteer assignments in high school. Maybe it could have helped me solidify my choice for my major a lot sooner.

@iamnikki it should be, but so many prefer to spend three or four hours a week complaining about being forced to do something they don't want to do for one hour a month.

@iamnikki I really wonder how those kids will fare when they experience the work place. Bosses really don't care if you don't want to do what is required. There are plenty of people who are just waiting to jump into that job just so they can feed their families and keep a roof over their heads.

@Serenitree Yea, I'm scared to think of the future. World is pretty bad already

That would indeed be ludicrous ... we're going to -force- you to perform volunteer work??? how is that going to do anything but cause massively badly done tasks, huge resentment, and lifelong resistance to the whole community service concept?
Serenitree · F
@firefall that must be why kids are angry enough to bring firearms to school and start shooting people.
I sometimes think volunteering is a good step into the real world

@Serenitree I refer you to the comment I was answering (which was somewhat off the OP, I guess)

But community "service" is also an alarming misnomer for something you're compelling with the threat of punishment, as it's certainly not voluntary servitude, so it is involuntary servitude. And if you think that's a good lesson to teach high school students, I'd say that's a perfect example of the horrible nature of american schools, which seem to take pride in producing good little authority-worshipping robots, rather than alert, questioning minds.

@firefall what country are you from?

@firefall I see what you are getting at. But I also know that the requirement is approximately 1 hour per month throughout the 4 years. Or if they prefer, they can do it all in one year. If they can find a good placement, they can get it completed in 1 month. And not think of it again for the rest of the 4 years. If you think of it, attending school is mandatory with certain subjects being required. Working as an unpaid worker for what amounts to one average work week in a 4 years span is not abusive. Most if not all students accumulate a lot more hours just hanging out doing nothing and getting nothing for it.

It is pretty dumb, and shouldn't be a requirement in my honest opinion. Especially since you can't put those CS hours onto a Resume. But it also depends on how your school balances out the Community Service time.

For instance, I had to go to a different school to help elementary-level students or a hospital to assist others for my school's Community Service time once during the school week. Once a week isn't so bad, especially since it's gotten me out of classes. I will admit, that how other schools may handle it is pretty awful. Some people had to spend their entire Saturday doing some sort of CS work.

@TheMasterMan1 the work done can be put on a resume as work experience. At least it can where I live. I believe that 40 hours in four years is actually pretty worthless. It should be more. Maybe 40 hours a year. That's only four hours a month.

I think it's good for them
No. I think that is stupid. And so are senior projects. You have already done 12 years of school. Maybe more if preschool and kindergarten were involved. They were not for me. But 12 have been done, you have learned what was taught, not just lets the kids graduate without stupid stipulations. One can make a personal choice, when they are an adult, whether to volunteer of their time (or money) , or not.
