At what age is it okay for kids to read stories with sex, foul language, and drugs?

I'm curious about people's attitudes regarding this. I'll be teaching a workshop for high school kids. One of the stories I'll have them read is full of violence, dirty language, drugs, and sexual references (no actual sex in the story).

@evile, the question is more about what can be read in an educational environment. i think most of the kids will read and watch this stuff on tv, but i'm trying to grasp if it would be appropriate in an academic environment.

some of my teachers did that... It was a little annoying because they were trying so hard to relate lol but I did end up liking most of it.
