Does it hurt you when someone catfishes you?

There was a girl I was cool with on periscope and she turned out to be fake and she disappeared on me. I was really bummed. I considered her a friend. Why do people create fake profiles and stories online?

I understand. I befriended someone on EP. She claimed to be an 18 year old girl living in France, but originally from England. She had a huge, very real back story, so I believed everything she told me. She was adopted, had leukaemia, needed a bone marrow transplant. Miraculously, her bio mom happened to be in France for some other thing and her blood type was a match, and when they tested her, she was a perfect donor. This went on for months of chemo, and relapses and transfusions. I fell for her story. But one day my daughter was using my iPad, and my EP account was open on our private messages. She asked me why Madeline was sending me all these pictures from Grey's Anatomy. We read through all the exchanges and everything she told me was from a story line on that show. When I asked her why she did all this, her account was deleted, her Facebook account was deleted. And I never heard from her again. Unless she is here, on SW and catfishing someone else.

omg that's sick im sorry
Serenitree · F
@wingeyes: and yet, my first rush of emotion was relief. All those months, I thought I was talking to a dying kid who had a dream of becoming a surgeon so she could save lives, I was so sad, because I was sure she would die. When I realized it was all a lie, all I felt was glad that it wasn't a dying kid after all.

I don't know, but that does hurt. I'm sorry. Could I substitute? 😂 I don't lie. ❤
wingeyes · 36-40, F
sure!

It won't hurt anymore, mostly because i've watched so many episodes of the show catfish, and i've generally learned my lesson when it comes to giving away personal details online, like your phone number or a picture of yourself. For people who haven't experienced this yet, don't think it can't happen to you, because some people are psychotically foolable. Just be aware and be careful with people who don't have a picture or just people who have a picture that looks too perfect. or was it "she fooled me!"

It wouldn't bother me. I have real friends as well as internet friends.
wingeyes · 36-40, F

Degbeme · 70-79, M
I never understood how people can be so cruel and deceiving. But that`s me.
wingeyes · 36-40, F
we talked for a long time. SHe claimed to be my biggest fan. And then one day she was like im quiting scope I don't want your painting bye. And left. And never talked to me again. I was just a substitute friend
It was probly some weird dude and not a girl at all
wingeyes · 36-40, F
yep

I don't have many online friends for that very reason
abstractmuse90 · 31-35, F
they could be deeply insecure about something that they feel they need to be someone else.
abstractmuse90 · 31-35, F
@wingeyes: the women who i talked to, said she posed as someone else and i could understand that, but when i stopped talking to her, she contacted my family members as other people, even though they say they weren't her.
wingeyes · 36-40, F
@abstractmuse90: yikes! I've had nigerian love scammers on dating sites ( those are so easy to catch) and fake people on EP. But contacting my fam? Never
abstractmuse90 · 31-35, F
Yeah, i deeply regretted sharing my life story with her.

So sad...that's why I keep a very small circle.
Serenitree · F
@wingeyes: no. You shouldn't expect it. You need to take people at face value, or you lose something valuable. So, maybe someone else will lie to you. Just don't send money. If they start crying poverty and asking for money, then you can begin to be suspicious, but in general, don't expect the worst of people. You'll only be hurting yourself if you do.

@Serenitree: the people who ask for money ( like the nigerian catfishes) are easy to spot. But the ones who appear to be your friends? That hurts. Like that happened to me on EP too a couple people just up and disappeared and were not real
wingeyes · 36-40, F
@Serenitree: and yes I still believe in the goodness in people
Bigrobbie · 56-60, M
You can trust me, I'm a doctor 😉
Bigrobbie · 56-60, M

Dolphins · 22-25, M
You should have called up nev and max from the show catfish
wingeyes · 36-40, F
my friends researched her number and found that she had no social media. It was crazy cause she watches all my scopes.

I have not been catfished but I have been ghosted before and that hurts.
Zonuss · 41-45, M
Good question.
