Why do some people say “Sometimes you have to be mean” to get stuff done or someone to learn a lesson?
Like one of the kids wouldn’t sit in his chair correctly and we’ve told him to sit the right way. He refused to listen and 10 minutes later he fell on the found and started crying. The teacher and two assistants didn’t feel bad for him. The teacher said, “Yeah, see? That’s what you get for not sitting the right way. I don’t even wanna hear it. That’s your fault. And she walked off to her desk.
One assistant said, “Don’t come crying to me. That’s your fault not mine. You didn’t listen to us so walk away.
I went and helped him but another assistant said, “What are you doing? Don’t help him. That’s a natural consequence he needed to face. You’re so NICE.” She said it like it’s a bd thing.
They pulled me aside and said, “Kids need to learn the hard way and they won’t learn to toughen up if you keep rescuing or coddling them. Sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind. Be “mean”.
I felt so bad for the poor kids but the three other staff didn’t. This is kindergarten I worked in before I got fired.
