Can people with certain ailments get a handicap sign for their vehicle?

Or do you have to actually be on disability?

In California your doctor needs to fill out a form and it can be for debilitating diseases (particularly ones affecting breathing or the heart) as well as physical handicaps. Unfortunately, a lot of people forget that when they see someone who looks physically OK using a handicapped placard and starts harassing them when the person very well may have a lung or heart impairment that is not readily visible.
Where I stay you can get a parking permit ( blue badge) without being on disability allowance. You have to prove you have a disability though.

I had a Disability parking permit for a couple of years, mainly so I could access the parking at work. No actual disability benefits there. After that time I was able to walk and manage the stairs in the lot again.😷

You just need a doctor to approve and then fill out a form and send it in. This is highly abused by most people.
