If you accept the authority of the Bible, there is no good reason for believing in the existence of Lucifer. The name Lucifer comes from the Latin word for the morning star, i.e. the planet Venus. It was used to translate the prophecy from Isaiah 14:12, originally written in Hebrew, and referring to the fall of the king of Babylon. Later church tradition came to associate this prophecy with Jesus' statement in Luke 10:18 that he saw Satan fall from heaven. However, the Bible itself is completely silent about any figure called Lucifer, and the context of Isaiah 14 itself has nothing to do with any fallen angel.
