I have a cat. I am allergic to cats, so it's a bit of a sacrifice to have one.
I know...makes no sense. I was working with one of my Alzheimer's patients and she was being removed from her home by her stepdaughter, and put into a nursing home. Her cat was a rescue, and he was almost 10 years old, so no shelter would take him unless it was a kill shelter. My patient was so distraught, thinking her cat would be killed.
I told the stepdaughter I would take the cat. He cost me almost $3000 in medical bills, and I didn't even want him at first. A cat was the last thing I wanted...but he lived with me for three years before he died, and I fell in love with him.
When I finally had to have him put to sleep, I was heartbroken...and all I could think of was an end to the pain...so I adopted another cat, who had been rescued by a Veterinarian Feline Rescue place in Lancaster, Massachusetts. He was a stray who had been captured by a kill shelter in New York, and the Vet Group regularly does runs to remove those cats and save them and find forever homes for them.
I am so happy I adopted him. He is a NOW beautiful and demanding and annoying kitty...and has arrived at that place after being terrified and hiding night and day.

So funny. I have a 95 pound American Bull that is the best alarm system ever if you ring the doorbell but as long as you don't ring the doorbell you could walk in and take everything in the house to include his doggie bed and he wouldn't even wake up. @Notsimilar

@Mellowgirl They squabble with one another more than they chirp. They are tired I guess. I have to turn the lights out in the living room or turn them down and then if they continue (and sometimes they sound like raccoons chattering) I will get a dowel rod and run it across the bars of their cage they hate that and it will shut them up quickly. Sometimes I can just show them the stick or stand it up in the chair where they can see it and they’ll stop.

@Mellowgirl sometimes one of the canaries starts up on me to turn the lights off and the tv down, typically about 10 p.m. I turned the table lamp off next to me and that usually satisfies her but come about midnight she wakes up and fusses to have everything turned off including the tv. Pretty little birds but they can be bossy.

@TexChik they are sweet. We had a border collie when we moved to Nebraska, she was very sweet too. She got hit by a truck, we lived in a rural area and border collies have the instinct to herd and she chased a truck and got too close. A few days later the farmer who lived next to us paid us a visit and asked what happened to our dog. We told him that she got hit by a truck and died. He said he was sad to hear about it, every day when it came time to gather the dairy cows in to the barn to milk, he’d open the gate and she would herd them in for him, saved him a lot of work.

I have had pets ever since I was a child.
Mostly dogs, but in High school I was in 4H so had a calf that I raised.
The last 20 years have had cats, when i got married my wife had two cats which came as a package deal. These cats were so different than what my perception was, in a good way. Since then, we are on our second set of cats and they are wonderful companions and become part of the family.

I was hoping to share good news of my own, but I got rejected by the rescue centre, they said because I don't have a garden it's unlikely they'll give me a dog.
Its really put me off, even finding a breeder... Since my circumstances are the same.

@Northerner it's really upsetting they pretty much told me that lots are coming in and need rehoming because people are abandoning them due to the pandemic.
