Do you believe in self diagnosis of a mental illness? And explain why or why not?

naoradix · 36-40, F
Definitely. I was abused and neglected by my parents my whole life, and have overcome all of my problems without medication or a therapist. I'm stronger than anyone I know. It's just a matter of how badly you want to change your life.

@MalteseFalconPunch: Why does this upset you?

I never said how I solved my problems is the answer to everyone else's problems - just that there is more than one option, and pharmaceutical companies are lying. There are tons of peer-reviewed articles on Google Scholar, which is a search engine for scholarly articles, on the topics I listed. I'm also a trained professional, and there are several school of thought in psychology - not just one. Take out your anger on someone else.
To an extent--yes. It's very difficult to differentiate the difference between certain mental illnesses. Someone desperately searching for an answer who is suffering from anxiety might consider themselves OCD, which most likely isn't the case.

After months of living in such a gloomy state, I was able to diagnose myself with depression and FINALLY got help. Being as mentally unstable as I was back then, I think it's very important to be cautious when treading those waters... we all react differently to reality--or to what we may thing "reality" is. If that makes any sense.

Don't quote me on this but I'm at least 90% positive that believing you can diagnose your own mental illness is a mental illness itself.

Lol 😂
If you're truly mentally ill, you're not going to see your problems in the same way as someone trained in that area. However, I believe in false diagnoses and that some doctors are too quick to label and medicate. I've been abused in my life, sometimes severely, but I've overcome and triumphed by creating techniques that work for me. I'm not medicated or undergoing counseling. I've recognized what I need to stay healthy and I am proactive in helping myself.

No, people train for years and still must follow the parameters set in the DSM. And even then, a multidisciplinary team is advised. The average person just doesn't posses the ability to do so correctly.

I'm not sure what you're talking about. I'm a psych RN and never saw any physicians go rogue. If they were to, and some must, that's malpractice.

Maybe where you work, but it happens every day, and in small ways. I know someone that just ended a relationship with their psychologist because the psychologist started interjecting her personal life into his therapy.
Flenflyys · 31-35, F
That's really messed up. Are you sure they are a psychologist though? Because anyone can call themselves a therapist.
JarJarBoom · 41-45, F
gawd, my in laws do this all the time...they are like "I'm disabled, I have PTSD with anxiety" ... Me: "did you get diagnosed by a doctor?" ... Them: "No, I just know I have it"

if it's not psychosis, it is possible understand what your problem might be.
Flenflyys · 31-35, F
More of your idiotic theories I see

Silverfox420 · 36-40, F
Not really, but there's enough info out there for someone to check their symptoms. Helping yourself is possible.
