Over here on the Dark Continent (in South Africa) schools are closed until after the Easter weekend. The June/July school holidays have been reduced by a week.

HannibalAteMeOut · 22-25, F
Countries should make sure that not only schools are closed, because then people are going to act as if this is a holiday and start traveling, going out to play, gathering at cafés etc... Everything needs to close down and people to start working from home as much as possible. Closing one thing isn't going to save anyone, people need to stay home as a general rule and socially distance themselves from one another.

@RodneyTrotter yeah the key word here is "yet"! This is fucked up.

Today is the last day schools can be open here in Minnesota. They will be closed through Friday the 27th at minimum. We expect to see an extension of that. But our governor is acknowledging that this is a 'learn more every day' situation and we will do best if we are able to flex and roll with the punches as they come.

@RodneyTrotter This is one of the areas that may become controversial. Healthy children and younger adults are at a minimal risk for serious illness - but there is some risk and they are perfectly suitable 'carriers.'

However, we don't have an interest in doing things that are counterproductive without benefit. The Director of Center for Infectious Disease Research cites a study that found 35% of nurses in the US are mothers to school-aged children. I can imagine that number is similar in other nations. Is it a great plan to face what could be the greatest stress modern hospitals have ever faced - minus a third of our healthcare workers?

There may well be some far more difficult choices ahead.

All schools are closed across the US I believe .

@Powderflask yep . On line school started today . My kids homeschool ... our nanny teaches them
Powderflask · 31-35, M
@TexChik trying to sympathize with my friends who are worried about losing their income since basically all schools and daycares closed.

No, they closed all schools for the time being and classes are held via TV or online. Coffee shops and restaurants, as well as malls, are still open though there is a limit to 50 people being at one place and elderly people can easily get a fine for being outside.
HannibalAteMeOut · 22-25, F
@Melpomene oh I see how it is...
Melpomene · 22-25, F
@HannibalAteMeOut Some of this was updated a couple of hours ago. There were rumours of this possibility. It's a small country and we are far from having enough resources (including medical staff) to save others so the government is trying to avoid the worst-case scenario(s) as best as possible.
HannibalAteMeOut · 22-25, F
@Melpomene I know, it's the same here. It's for the better.
I think i will go for a pub lunch tomorrow...should be plenty of room...

I won’t really...😃
@RodneyTrotter yeah-lots of places will not survive this.

My school is still open. Children are still attending, although my suspicions are that tomorrow, a lot less children will come through the doors. Unless we have an underlying health problem, we have no choice but to go in.
pennynoodles · 56-60, F
Proper teaching today, we are taking each day at a time. @Moonpenny

It's only our government, everybody else seems to have started with closing schools :/ They've finally figured out their "herd immunity" strategy was *******s. Hmm. Wonder how much that's going to affect the fatality count :/ They care about the footsie dropping but what about people?! Teachers?!
ozgirl512 · 26-30, F
They are and it's contentious....I think there's two aspects to be considered... One is obviously contagion, but the bigger one is all those parents at home looking after them and not producing things that are needed...
My understanding is that all the Catholic schools are closed. The public schools are also closed in my city, and in several other cities in the Bay Area.

@RodneyTrotter We’ll see. The combination of people choosing not to vote at all and his supporters who see him as a “victim” of the “lefties and liberals”, and are determined to back him no matter what he says or does, may prove problematic. Especially in the swing states, which factor into our electoral college.

A friend of mine whose kids are home said that her teenage daughter suggested that since there’s no school, she and her friends ought to hang out at the mall. Smh.

Certain people should be protecting themselves absolutely. For the rest who are pretty healthy we will most likely shake it off. The flu has killed more people in the US this season than the corona-virus has globally. That is direct from the CDC website (the statistics)
Yulianna · 22-25, F
@ravenwind43 the problem is, if it turns out that it's a storm in teacup, you will say, there, i was right all along. but there is no way to measure what would have happened without all the precautions.

Shutting things down in areas where there are zero cases of the virus makes no sense

unless you test everyone, you have no way of telling whether or not there are any cases of the virus. so yes, for containment, it does make sense.

Curfews are pointless, as if the virus only attacks towards certain hours.

curfews reduce social interaction outside the main hours of economic activity, and so reduce pportunities to spread the virus, while minimising the impact on the economy.

Fear mongering worst case scenarios when so far it's been anything but that.

describing worst case scenarios is not "fear mongering", it is treating people as adults and giving them clear information. it is not a forecast of what will happen but a projection of the worst estimable outcome.
ravenwind43 · 51-55, F
@Yulianna we shall agree to disagree🙂
Yulianna · 22-25, F
@ravenwind43 that is reasonable, i guess 🙂

have a good night, day, whatever it is where you are

@RodneyTrotter I'd say do but I'm not sure. The PA dept of Health updates the corona numbers each night around 7 PM. I generally look by now but I haven't yet. I have seen increases in the Pittsburgh area though. My county has been clean so far.

In my area Schools, churches, bars, gyms, restaurants are now closed. You can still get carry out or delivery at the restaurants, but can't be seated.
goliathtree · 56-60, M
schools are closing here until at least April 6, Most universities are online only, but unless the kids stay home, it might only exacerbate things.
SubstantialKick · 31-35, M
It's only the schools that are closed in the Chicago area. Other places are open but are pretty much dead.
