Are school open as normal in your country? What is the point of avoiding social contact while kids are mixing with god knows who, parents are mingling

at school gates, teachers doing the same while theatres, cinemas and other places of social gathering are closed.
Surely the solution is to close schools, assume that the summer holiday is early while this term is postponed, then return as normal when the epidemic is in decline?
Why are governments deliberately allowing the outbreak to reach a bigger peak than necessary?

No, they closed all schools for the time being and classes are held via TV or online. Coffee shops and restaurants, as well as malls, are still open though there is a limit to 50 people being at one place and elderly people can easily get a fine for being outside.

@Melpomene seriously, fining elderly people? And what if they do stay home but their children/grandchildren get infected and then visit them? Social distancing should apply to everyone, otherwise it does nothing.

@HannibalAteMeOut That's what I heard. Elderly are especially advised to stay home and apparently there are lines they can call if they need anything, since they are the most vulnerable. They don't have to pay bills until the situation is solved.
In case I wasn't clear, social distancing does apply to everyone but it's not (yet) forbidden to go out however it should be quick. Everyone is advised to stay indoors, leave only when necessary, don't stock items more than usual, call a doctor if they have any symptoms (and upon that will get further instructions), and if they leave they should disinfect once they get back, even washing the package of items if possible...

@Melpomene ah then alright. It just seemed weird to me that coffee shops and malls are open because I assumed people were free to go unless they are older. Here they are all closed, except for delivery.

@HannibalAteMeOut They are open because they can't close them (??), don't know if it's because of the profit though there mustn't be more than 50 people at the time. Everyone is told to stay home and leave only when necessary and thanks to older people going around we also can't be out between 8 PM and 5 AM unless we have a paper that says it's for work.

@Melpomene oh I see how it is...

@HannibalAteMeOut Some of this was updated a couple of hours ago. There were rumours of this possibility. It's a small country and we are far from having enough resources (including medical staff) to save others so the government is trying to avoid the worst-case scenario(s) as best as possible.

@Melpomene I know, it's the same here. It's for the better.
