What Is The First Thing You Would Do If You Won The Lottery?

SW-User
Hire an attorney and financial advisor.
@SW-User don't forget to start a DBA or business so you can accept the check as a corporaton instead of as your legal name

Sit down and figure out my priorities and then get some financial counseling. I’d like to buy some rural land near a creek and build a home & a treehouse, a greenhouse and some other things.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@akindheart I’d love to have an off-grid home. Have seen home with rocket stove heaters, they use about 1/3 of the firewood that a regular wood-burning stove uses, you can make benches with air ducts under them to heat them and have radiant heat too. A greenhouse can also be equipped with a rocket stove and heat ducts to keep it warm in the winter for year-round growing.

@cherokeepatti you have so many ideas..go for it!
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@akindheart haha haven’t won the lottery yet

Deposit the check
first i'd file for an LLC corporation, have it formed and then I'd go collect the check and insist on them making the check out to my corporation.

Then I'd collect the check and take it straight to a finanical planner... hopefully to put into something with killer dividends. investing the vast majority of my winnings.'

of course i'd buy a house on the gold coast of Chicago to be nearer my honey.

basically i'd be moving to chi town...

Bank it and go on a holiday for a couple of weeks and think about it. A cottage in Devon would be my one main purchase. I would do a few nice charitable things for those that need it and perhaps make it a regular thing, like outings for the elderly.

Spend most of it on expensive cars, expensive women and expensive drink.

But probably just waste the rest 🤪.
but shit i'm way too smart to blow my money on lottery tickets so we all know this will never happen.

@Shina our country's Lotto tonight is worth $38 million.

Tax free $38 million. Would be nice. Thankfully, we can choose to stay anonymous here in NZ with large wins.
DragonFruit · 61-69, M
Deposit the money into a bank account and call my accountant.

Nothing, actually. I'd enjoy just having the money in the bank for a while. Then, pay-off debts. Third, hire a financial planner. Fourth, give some of it away to family. Fifth, quit my job. Sixth, sell the condo and buy a house. Seventh, travel.
SimpleKiwiGirl · 51-55, F
@Human1000 that's the way to do it.

Keep working. Get yourself used to having all that money in the bank while gaining a 'little' interest. All the while, seriously planning on what to do with it all. Without drawing attention to the fact you now have this money.

I saw what happened when Dad & one of his workmates won $340k between them. Dad was wise, other guy blew his half in 3/4 months or so. Ended up worse off than what he was before the money.
Human1000 · M
@SimpleKiwiGirl So many stories about Lotto winners blowing through their money and it ruining their lives. You also need something to do -- just quitting one's job is disruptive.
SimpleKiwiGirl · 51-55, F
@Human1000 Feb '97 (when it was won) - Dad: paid off mortgage, renovated house. Gave me, sister, and both younger brother $5k each to go have fun. Invested rest. Those investments are still paying off today.

Other guy: was a heavy drinker / gambler. Don't need to say any more.

Did put a substantial dent in familial (mostly his siblings) relationships, too. "I want this. Wouldn't this be nice..."

So, nope. Tell no one.
