Is it appropriate for a high school teacher to make their political ideology known?

It has always been my belief that a teacher’s responsibility is to teach children to think - not to teach them to think what the teacher thinks.

This is my feeling exactly!!!@Mamapolo2016

@LittleBittyPretty1 it’s funny because they teach your kids to think - then don’t want them to think for themselves - unless it suits their agenda

Yup. They want puppets@JavaJoe
why doesn't the high school teacher just sick to teaching - nobody wants to hear their views - they have all of college to hear some old hippie with gray hair and a pony tail to tell them how racist America is. And you will have 4 years to believe it - so when you come out your brain ready to march / picket / chant and hate whitey.

Appropriate... no.

Sometimes it is hard for them to not express it. We had a history teacher that talked a lot about their experience during the 70’s peace protests. I appreciated his sharing of experiences.

It might be difficult not to these days, but I think it best for a teacher to try to be neutral, and to try to teach balance. Of course, teaching the history of when and why the political system screwed up and civilization suffered, is an important thing to cover, such as the Crusades and WWII, for 2 examples. Perhaps also teaching about science and evolution can be a difficult subject, but a teacher should stick to the science whenever possible.
They can say what they want as long as they encourage their students to think for themselves -- without telling them what they should think.

I didn’t push it in the 90s but my students could tell by my actions. If they asked I had no problem sharing with them.

I know my kids teachers do. Many of them at least. I can’t remember that mine did. @DearAmbellina2113
