I'm 39 and have never asked my family for anything, but this past year I bit the bullet and asked my mother for a loan to help me get out of Texas.

My father taught me early on to work for what I wanted.
He never gave us any allowance, but if we did chores (painting, laundry, mowing the lawn) he’d give us a few dollars.
He said when we earned money, we could do what we wanted with it.
When I was 14, I wanted a tennis racquet which cost $65 (a lot in those days)....so I bought it.
My father told me he thought I was foolish to spend that much money for a tennis racquet.
I replied “Maybe, but it’s my money and I can get what I want with it”.
He smiled broadly, knowing that I had learned the lesson.

I have never borrowed from my friends. However, at my mother's insistence, my brother and I received our inheritance early, prior to her death, with the understanding that we would pay the cost of her nursing home using that money.

@4meAndyou how lovely!
missionfigdeluxe · 61-69, M
There should be mandatory prison sentences for family members that beg other family members for money
popmol · 22-25, M

@popmol It's normal and sensible, it's what I'd expect from everybody, so it's not really all that impressive, it's run-of-the-mill.
