It really depends in the Dynamics honestly.
I think you should try to help find their "spark".
Remember, adding negitive consequences is garbage for motivation and training. Add good things, take negitive things away, take good things away. Don't add negitive consequences.
Help them find what they are good at.
Set something achievable, achievable for them, something good. And do not change that standard. The most important rule to success is consistently and the vast majority if people and adults can't be consistent.
