Thoughts on YouTube disabling comments on videos featuring young children?

I support the idea

how about banning videos featuring young children ,problem solved you perv
Sicarium · 46-50, M
@english You jumped the pearl clutching shark with that one.
Quizzical · 46-50, M
I'd rather the paedos could be seen rather than drive them further underground with censorship...
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
@Quizzical The issue was they were using the comment section to network with each other, exchanging timestamps of children in compromising positions and then moving onto links. Watch even part of the video I linked in the thread which explains how this problem functions.
Quizzical · 46-50, M
@CountScrofula So rather than censor altogether surely a reporting function would be better which YouTube can pass onto the authorities and maybe get this scum off the streets?

Prevent communication and they will still find a way to do it but it would be harder to trace.

VERY good idea. There was an active pedophilia problem on those videos.

The ban was likely the result of this video going viral (warning - it goes into how pedophiles work online and it's pretty horrifying)

@JaggedLittlePill @SW-User The banning comments on videos will hopefully go a long way to keeping this stuff out of spaces kids inhabit.

@CountScrofula I hope so, I'm so worried about the internet with the kids.. I want them to be able to do what their friends do... but also am scared
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
@SW-User The solution to fear is knowledge. Like, figure out what kids are doing online and then try to puzzle out the risks associated and then just, well, look them up. It's when you aren't sure that it gets the scariest.
Sicarium · 46-50, M
A lazy response and one more nail in the censorship coffin.
Elegy · 46-50
Should never have been otherwise.

Good for them. I don't use YouTube a lot.
The 'censorship' is already there as a function to have comments approved 1st by the poster before it goes public.
Seems like not many used it and now YouTube blocked these comments altogether thus taking away more of our power
Can you really blame YouTube for taking the next step?
Quizzical · 46-50, M
@Robynthebeautiful It's a slippery slope though... They've started to censor and change algorithms so certain things they don't want us to see will not appear on the feed.

I realise this issue is a big one that everyone agrees is a horrendous practice, but censorship has a tendency to spread.
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
Ridiculous. Maybe ask for approval first. But if we live in a world where I can't say how adorable my nephew is because someone might say something wrong, that's ass backwards.
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
@JaggedLittlePill I don't have 20 minutes to watch a video right now. I don't have a particular dog in this race, either. But it seems like yet more censorship. No, of course I don't want to hear from pedos, but somehow I feel this creates a slippery slope.
JaggedLittlePill · 46-50, F
@uncalled4 how is avoiding pedophiles commenting on children's videos censorship? Every website has an obligation by law to keep children safe online from inappropriate content. YouTube did so in the best way they could.

As well private companies don't follow the laws of the consitution they can censor anything on their website they want to.
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
@JaggedLittlePill It's avoiding everyone, unless I'm misunderstanding.
MizzBella · 31-35, T
Good idea. Keeps the pedos at bay
erika88 · 26-30, F
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
@erika88 Pedophiles are using the comments section on these videos to timestamp shots of children in compromising positions and network with each other. So it's not just creepy comments but they're actually being used as a form of networking for creeps.
erika88 · 26-30, F
@CountScrofula and how do u know that? :P
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
@erika88 Check the video I linked elsewhere in the thread.
SW-User
Yeah, that seems like a good idea.
Eddiesolds · 61-69, M
Yes it's a good thing
