Freedom!!!!!
There is no freedom, where religion is concerned. Especially for women...🤷‍♀️

Yep, and like Muslim woman they show their devotion with their uniform.. I'm not for or against, the important thing is is free choice
Hoosierxdaddy62 · 61-69, M
@Fernie I have an aunt that is a religious Sister (like a Nun but not cloistered, there's a difference) and does not wear a Habit nor does anyone in her Order. As wil2power has pointed out, not all Nuns are required to wear a Habit. That depends on the rules of the Order. Think Sound of Music, Maria doesn't wear a Habit through the whole movie.

It's THEIR choice to join a religious order and it's THEIR choice which one they join.

Nuns wear the Habit for a number of reasons but most often wear it as a sign of purity and chastity. It's a beautiful notion that someone is willing to devote their lives to serving their Lord and Savior. When so many people don't believe in anything, it's reassuring that nuns exist.

Different Orders focus on different things. Some focus on healthcare, some education, some public service, some the homeless, some on charity. When a woman feels a calling to be a nun, she studies the orders, what they do and asks to join. It's a several year process to actually become a nun, and a devotion without limits to follow through.

You can ask any nun or religious sister and I will guarantee you they feel more free than anyone they know.

@Fernie in joining and knowing what is required before hand?
Hoosierxdaddy62 · 61-69, M
Absolutely, a lot of discernment goesinto the choice, sometimes literally for years.
And I guess that priests in monasteries are the same because, in choosing to cover their hair and bodies, it goes against masculine freedom???

No??? I thought not. For some men and women choosing to cover themselves can be liberating for them. They have the freedom to [big]choose[/big] how to adorn their body and the big difference here is choice. No one holds a gun to the head of a priest or nun and says "Dress like us, or we will kill you".

Likewise, a priest and nun actually have their faces uncovered for the most part, which some people find to be less scary than those women who choose (I'm going to assume free will here) to cover their whole body.

As a westerner, if I was to choose to walk around in a black outfit and wear a balaclava with just eye holes on the hottest day of the year, then I reasonably expect to be picked up and questioned by the police over my intent - yet it's fine for eastern women to go about showing absolutely no skin at all.

@HootyTheNightOwl that's like saying people who choose be on a diet are oppressed! XD
They can't have sugar why???
@SW-User Of course they are... we should all be able to have our cake and eat it just because!!! 🤣
SW-User
@HootyTheNightOwl exactly! I am on a high sugar diet 😂

Lol, but seriously though, it's kinda funny
Fernie · F
the buybull and religion in general is anti-woman. apparently we are unclean, vile creatures who should only uncover ourselves when males want us to satisfy their sexual needs
Harriet03 · 41-45, F
@Fernie You got it hun ✌
SW-User
How can that be against freedom? If I wanna wear a sweater in summer, I will, and do. If I wanna walk in a T-shirt in winter, I will and do in 40° weather. Am I oppressed for choosing? 🤔

I think not
Fernie · F
@EarthlingWise Right! Many are fighting to become priests...I think it's all nonsense but still...I support them in that fight
@EarthlingWise Maybe they didn't, but nuns and priests have both come and gone over the years - they don't have an armed guard keeping them locked in the monastery.

While numbers may not have increased drastically, there's no real evidence that they've decreased drastically or that the reason for nuns leaving religious life has to do with the habit that they wear, either.

@SW-User You'll never get someone with a closed mind to see a different point of view.
@HootyTheNightOwl of course it's got little to do with the beautiful habit they wear, it has to do with freedom, to think to work, to love.

Most Nuns garments started out as very ordinary lay garb but they didn't change it..it became a habit!

I'm not a Christian - indeed I have no religious belief whatsoever, but I respect the right of people to believe in whatever they choose without childish bitching like this. I lived through the era of Women's Lib - the launch of "Spare Rib" etc and the publication of "The Female Eunuch" - and to witness the vilification which Germaine Greer sometimes suffers nowadays at the hands of the modern sisterhood makes me despair.

People who live in glass houses should't throw stones.

Actually most don't wear traditional habits and head coverings in the USA, not in the past 50 years or so.
SW-User
they are following a teaching
it's a sign of respect
🤨
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
So they are not free to completely cover their bodies if they want to?
Ladybutterfly · 31-35, F
@hippyjoe1955 👍️👏👏👏👏👏
Ladybutterfly · 31-35, F
@hippyjoe1955 Most likely because they think that their freedom isn't complete until it affects others in some way.
its a difference if you are part of a relugious cult that requires clothing or if its forced upon you by the society you live in
Fernie · F
@SquirrelGirl those two things seem exactly the same to me

They probably want to wear regular clothes but it's become a habit
Pfuzylogic · M
The outfit is traditional.
It emphasizes modesty.
MartinTheFirst · 26-30, M
Since the kind of "freedom" this world wants is not in line with God's principles. Now there may be variations of interpretation of what God's principles regarding decency is.
Those are traditional habits. Many nuns don’t wear them now...some you wouldn’t recognize as nuns if you saw them.
