In the earlier days of the American Mob (1960s) mob gangs would take over local businesses and demand a percentage of the profits in exchange for

"protection", which really meant that they would leave the business owners alone. If the businesses didn't pay up though they would cause trouble by violence and damage. So my question is, what is keeping me from forming a gang and doing this same thing here in 2018? What would stop us? How did they get away with it back then?

I think the real question is; why would you want to?

@JovialPlutonian Fast and easy money
The mob did this many many many years before the 60s but to answer your question - nobody could stop you and you can do it. But if you get caught you will be tried and the jurys and judges and other officials cant be bought off or intimidated by little ole you. Back then the mob had power and $$ and people knew who was who - nobody wanted to testify against a mobster or be a jury member - so tons of cases got dismissed.

Well you have free will and others have the free will to stop you if that's what they wish.

Police were corrupt and/or intimidated.

It still goes down, but the government has taken over the largest portion of it. They cal it paying tour fair share though.
