Mine did that and I ignored it and it was fine.
But you still should check up on it. You could be alergic to the metal. Or even a small piece of dirt got in it.
@londonbr1dge Possibly. I have been cleaning it with Luke warm water and salt, though. My right ear did the same thing for a bit, but it wasn't this bad.

@lauriethecolourful I would use the cleaner they sold me. Yet I was pretty bad about cleaning it often.
But as long as the swelling doesn't last for over a week or starts bleeding or spreading you should be ok. But it's something you want to keep your eye on.

It sounds like a common site infection which is (usually) easily treated.

Don't take the ear ring out.
You can buy an antibacterial solution and soak a Q Tip to clean around the stud post.

The warm salt water is ok.

In fact I have found applying a very warm salt water compress to it for 5 mins will help to losen any muck and the heat helps to knock off infection too.

Then use the ice to ease the inflamation after.

If it is a little itchy that is normal and if you clean it with the suggested purchasable solution, regularly (3-4 times a day) it should clear up pretty quickly.

If it is red angry, swollen and weeping pus, please go and see a Dr asap as you may need antibiotics if the infection is bad.

colloidal silver. non-stinging/irritating/drying and will restore health. follow up with coconut oil.

All of the above and try putting an ice cube on it for a few minutes at a time.
@GerOttman I have been keeping ice on it. It hurts pretty bad right now. :D

@lauriethecolourful Well if all else fails put the ice cube in a glass and add some whiskey...

You have to take the piercing out sadly. Happened to my belly button piercing. Had to let it close up.

Clean it first with saline solution, and then get some anti-biotics.

Polysporin works.
