Since crops take forever to grow how did people in olden times eat?

BlueMetalChick · 26-30, F Best Comment
Paleolithic times, before we knew how to grow food we were hunters and gatherers. We'd hunt and kill animals for meat, and pick ripe fruits and vegetables we found in our environment. And we moved around a lot, from place to place, because hunting and gathering in the same spot depletes the resources so we'd move on to the next area while the animals and plants replenished.

The Neolithic Revolution occurred when humans discovered how to grow our own food. This probably happened when gatherers mistakenly dropped seeds of some kind while picking fruits and whatnot, and then when the group returned to that area, they noticed how the plants had grown in those spots. Which led to the realization that we could plant seeds to grow food.

@LvChris
They didn't do it because of some conservation based reasoning, there just wasn't any food left to be had.
I never said they did it out of concern for the environment. I never had the idea that they did. They most likely figured out that once there were no more resources, or very little resources at least, remaining in the area, it was best to leave because they could find food elsewhere. And once they returned to the previous areas later on and saw that the plant and animal populations had recovered, it's probable they realized there was a pattern.

@LvChris In a way, yes. They cared about their access to food. It had a positive effect on the environment, but they didn't mean it that way.

They probably spent more time tending their crops. Crops were a bigger thing then. I mean people still maintain crops but it’s not operated as much.

Pretty much all of human food culture arose from a concern with preserving food (dry pasta, pickling, cheese, sugaring) or making dicey food palatable to eat.
They preserved a lot of food to carry them. through. They also had animals that either produced food or became the food.

@Kazuya69 but now we can get food shipped from all over the world which is better for everyone

@Addictedtoglamour is it? You might be amazed how many farmers are paid by the government to actually burn their own crops or plow them under to help control supply and demand and raise food prices. We can ship food all over the world yet so many places are still starving to death because not its controlled by the rich. We have all this food and power yet we cant even feed the people in our own country.. humm what does that say?
