What's the difference between selfish and self-centered?

kayoshin · 36-40, M Best Comment
They are close to the same thing but i believe (if im not mistaken) that SELFISH is a person that does things for themselves, wants for themselves.. Puts themselves first etc
SELF CENTERED is a person that is selfish but above that they are the only focus of their existence, they are the center of their personal universe .

The biggest difference i think is that selfish is a small adjective it can fit a single wish or action but self centered is a personality trait that underlines or is synonim with selfishness.

What I don't agree about that self-centered is selfish @kayoshin

Well self centered is selfish even if not intentionally. By having a unrealistic perspective a self centred person will make selfish choices and do selfish things without realising how selfish they are. Adding to this the principle of " Ignorantia juris non excusat" which basically means not knowing the law doesn't mean you can break the law amd get away with it, a self centered person can't excuse their selfish behaviour to the eye of society by stating they hadn't considered how others feel when they did or said something and can not claim it's just a perspective thing not selfish reasons.

For an unselfish kind of self centering there is a specific word called : Introspective.

To me, selfish is everything humans do. Any action a person takes is always motivated by self-gain.

Example: A parent dies protecting their child. They decided to die, because it was more painful to them to watch their child die than to die themselves. So, to spare *themselves* pain, they decided to take the child's place.

Selfishness is not always a bad thing. For instance, say a person gives to charity, but they only do so because it makes them feel like they're a good person. It boosts their self-esteem. That's motivated by self-gain, but the fact that giving to others makes them feel good is not a bad thing.

Whereas, self-centeredness, to me, is not thinking of other people, at all.

So selfishness is about actions, whereas self-centeredness is a thought process, that's so correct @Tatsumi

Selfish is you only want your profit.
Self centred is you only think about yourself.

They're pretty much the same,,but selfish is a little more in the gimme gimme do for me I want and don't care what you want. Self centered is more like look at me not her, watch me, see me, notice me, do for me.

Self-centered is where one thinks the world revolves around them and every one should cater to their every whim...selfish is when one thinks the same way only they do it to and for themselves.

NOTHING ! 'Self Centered' is people's modern way of defining their social personality without them being labelled as selfish. As selfish sounds bit abusive.
Prettybrat · 26-30, F
There's a difference? ?
Yvolkova · 36-40, F
That's my question @Prettybrat
