The slaves were freed by the republicans.

In accordance with their philosophy:
Personal and financial freedom and independence.

The democrats wanted to keep slavery.. in accordance with their philosophy: you are a helpless victim and need to be taken care of (as long as you work/vote for us)

These philosophies haven’t changed.

The parties have actually changed quite a bit since then. Theodore Roosevelt was pretty good as a progressive republican which are pretty much unheard of these days. And the anti slavery group were known as radical republicans and were at odds with the conservative and moderate factions of the party at the time. Really it feels like both parties have squeezed all the good elements out and we're just left with trash on both sides.

@ViciDraco the philosophies haven’t which I just outlined...

Crazy that only the left believes in this proof-evasive party switch
ViciDraco · 41-45, M
@GardenSage progressive republicans very much believed in taxation to allow the government to improve social issues.

@ViciDraco what’s your point?

Yes we all know there’s a whole 360o political spectrum

@GardenSage also, modern republicans are very much against personal liberty. They try to legislate against women's rights to choose, lgbt rights, drug use, and all kinds of victimless issues. They believe in financial freedom and biblical law for social issues. Which is really not freedom at all. Finances shackle people more than free them and biblical law breaks the first amendment.

@ViciDraco look up libertarianism fool
ViciDraco · 41-45, M
@GardenSage those aren't republicans. They are closer to republicans as greens are closer to democrats. But they are different. I was libertarian some years back. Even voted libertarian presidential tickets. Until I educated myself further and realized free markets are a sham promoted for the powerful to grow more powerful through supply line monopolies. And that private property rights vastly favor those with wealth to gain more wealth while pressuring those without into ever deeper reliance upon those with it, often merely by luck of birth.

@ViciDraco they aren’t “republicans”

They are classic conservatives which fit neatly in the center of the spectrum where they uniquely understand balance as juxtaposed to those who adopt extremes
ViciDraco · 41-45, M
@GardenSage libertarians are classical liberals, the term liberal originally from liberty. Which is indeed very different from the modern liberal. The term liberal was pretty much stolen and co-opted from the libertarians. But at this point it seems your grasp on political history is rather severely colored by the talking points of present day pundits with agendas to push than it is on actual fact. Social conservatism is just as antithetical to libertarian philosophy as liberal economic policy is. It's just hard to see since the current libertarian party has by and large been hijacked by tea party republicans.

@ViciDraco I don’t disagree... but my perspectives are objective and haven’t been influenced in any way except for the results I see when I personally apply the philosophies to my own life
