Neuroimages are enough evidence that it exists. Some patients switch between hemispheres when identities are switched, besides the abnormal size of both, the amygdala and left-hippocampus, decreased activity in the frontal lobe too.
It does exist but the diagnosis is/was made without the scans. And not all cases were marked by those changes.
Those movies about Dissociative identity disorder that you've seen are typically over reacting or are actually psychopathics. But the reality is people with DID are typically normal everyday people living with the struggle of every day life. There often harmless, but have their own battles just like any other human being. It's also a myth that it's rare or only happen when you have black outs its different with every person so to compare people to each other wouldn't be a good idea. Last i checked though i'm not a evil person and i never harmed anyone also, unless i told someone you'd never know actually nobody would know. And no, my personality's don't wish to harm others in fact they're here to protect me and that's it. Dissociative identity disorder typically happens when someone has been abused as child or adult or someone has experienced traumatic events.
@calmingeffect I know it is listed in the DSM 5 but it would be difficult to be diagnosed that way incorrectly. I think triggers are suppose to cause certain segmented personalities to react. I think I have witnessed it with my Dad before during a phone conversation when he had two personalities interact with me during the discussion. He even argued with himself as we spoke.
@SomeLikeItHot Sorry about your dad. Although I think psychiatrists encourage patients by allowing the patient to run wild with fantasies with their alter egos giving them names, gender, personality traits etc...
@calmingeffect I could see that happening with some playing games with their doctors. Anyone that truly has that condition does not have the ability to make personalities appear and disappear under their control. The personalities are triggered by events outside of that person's control imo
@YoMomma Unfortunately mental illness has remained the major cause of grave crimes and many criminals are getting psychiatric assistance then released back in the society after a lengthy period of psychiatric therapy for them to commit even more damage
@Thevy29 Basically it's people who have had a traumatic past that dissociate and create many personalities. The mind gets fractured and create a defense mechanism of some sort whereby a person can alter personalities by impulse.
