Why do people feel like they need to lie about who they are?

I completely agree. I've never understood why people lie online. It's the one place I can be completely me. I appreciate sites like sw for this very reason.

I have no idea what goes through the minds of people that pretend to be someone they are not. Don't they realize that in time, that will be revealed? What is there to gain?

The cyber world is full of these people unfortunately...tread carefully ;)

Because of a lack of true support. Probably being burned at the slightest attempts to be themselves. Very few people recover from that. You are right about this place, it should be the one place that a person can be open and truly authentic

People often try to present themselves as something they want to be proud of. Not dissimilar to reality

I don't lie, I'm honest in my About Me. I say I have two accounts. I just feel the other on earth is rather wholesome and I didn't want to get a bunch of garbage messages there. The messages here haven't been as bad a single I was expecting, in all honesty. I probably could have combined it but this account makes me feel completely anonymous.
