They seem to have set themselves an impossible task and no real will to see it through

Take away the UN and see how that works out for the world
Unlearn · 41-45, M
@TryingtoLava Do you consider it a success?
@Unlearn ofc it is its a counsel of countries that come together to discuss crisis and protect each other
Unlearn · 41-45, M
@TryingtoLava If I were taking a test, that is how I would have defined it...

There's a reason why the school kids don't collect pennys for unicef anymore
@MarineBob I remember carrying those stupid boxes during halloween in the late 70's, not one single candy giver gave even a dime, some of them slamming the door in our faces by merely having a box. I remember seeing a lot of them thrown on the ground all over the place, I think we only did it one year.
My feeling is it is like a club. Started with Nobel intentions and as time passed, it’s members left and were replaced, and what once was, no longer fits the old scenarios and responses the club was built on. My feeling is also this is the case with the U.N. and it has lost its initial core values and overall is failing.

It's one thing for countries to verbally condemn the actions of another.
It's another to actually get blue helmets on the ground.
It's another still to get members to unite sufficiently to come up with a plan
The main success of the United Nations is that it exists at all. When you do something well it often looks like you have done nothing at all.
Bumbles · 51-55, M
Based on it's stated goals, I think it's a failure.

--to practice tolerance and live together in peace with one another as good neighbours, and

--to unite our strength to maintain international peace and security, and

--to ensure, by the acceptance of principles and the institution of methods, that armed force shall not be used, save in the common interest, and

--to employ international machinery for the promotion of the economic and social advancement of all peoples,

It is extremely successful in its failures.

It never was even designed to do much. Hence the opposing veto powers.

It could have been designed by percentage of what you put in that would be a percentage of the vote and be better than what it currently is.

That would be a purely capitalist approach. And I despise capitalism.

At least capitalism is a little bit functional, if unfair.

Depends who you ask.
It’s existence is to stop Soviet aggression…

Anyone seen any soviets lately?

Just remember kiddies.. UN EXPANSION. Is really Putin aggression.. 👍
Lila15 · 22-25, F
@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout You’re confusing it with NATO. The Soviet Union was one of the permanent security council members.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
The UN is like any other world regulation body. A great idea in principle, perverted by human beings..😷
Northerner · 70-79, M
I would say it is not fit for purpose.Just a place for the bureaucrats to meet and waste time and money.
Depends on each case, but in whole, I’d say a failure …
WhateverWorks · 36-40
Generally speaking, i’d say they’ve been successful. I don’t think it’s realistic to expect so many countries with varied cultures and interests to play nice-nice and always be on the same page. They’re doing all right.
Unlearn · 41-45, M
@WhateverWorks is it realistic to expect it to be unbiased, particularly when majority of their fundings is derived from a specific country?
WhateverWorks · 36-40
@Unlearn i’d say that’s pretty unrealistic, yeah. What’s important is that people point out when they are being biased, which increases eyes on the issue and accountability, which leads to at least some effort to do better about the biases, they may be inclined to consider

akindheart · 61-69, F
NATO is worse
exchrist · 31-35
In limbo (progress) but id say more failure than success. Brainwashing itself with post ww2 idea(l)s; and education standards are, in general, lacking.
Renkon · 36-40, M
It was successful in the beginning. Now it has lost its acceptance. It is exist for namesake.
Bleak · 36-40, F
What are its achievements??
