I was once walking in midtown Manhattan, where everyplace is very strict about "restrooms for patrons only."
(I was not close to a public place like Madison Square Garden , etc.)
I really needed a bathroom, so I went into a bar. I ordered a beer. I forced myself to stay in place until it came and I paid, and then I ran to the bathroom.
I think I drank about half the beer when I came back and then left.
