What if you go to a friend and tell them there's something they don't know about you that you kept from them for 8 years?

I know I don't owe anyone anything but I'm now wondering whether it's going to strengthen the friendship.

I suppose it depends on whether or not it changes who you’ve been to this person or the nature of your friendship. If not, it shouldn’t really matter.
