I thought this was great…

And if you’re too young to fully get the reference —that’s okay, too.

The Irish were treated very badly too, bottom of the socialorder.
@Dino11 True, but they basically established the NYPD.

@bijouxbroussard That is so true.
@bijouxbroussard Which is why so many movie cops are Irish to this day.
@LordShadowfire Art imitating life.

@Dino11 Back in the 1700 and 1800s the Irish were often considered a separate race and consider inferior by the British/English. I've also read that there was quite a lot of animosity between Irish and Blacks in America because Blacks took Irish jobs and the Irish found the Blacks the only group (other than Asians on the West Coast) lower on the social structure of the times than they were.
@ChipmunkErnie Yes. You may’ve also read about the Draft War in New York. There was mass conscription for soldiers to join the Union Army and many newly arrived Irish found themselves receiving notices to fight. They blamed the black people there, some who had always been free, and others who had escaped slavery and were also there seeking better lives. There was a mass riot, and the Irish burned down their neighborhood and lynched them. Many blacks who survived fled the area.

@bijouxbroussard Yes, very well-known riot. Lasted days, needed thousands of troops to stop. Black and white homes and businesses were attacked and/or burned -- including a black orphanage. Over 100 died, thousands injured.
@Dino11 Yes, but they eventually assimilated and today many people of Irish descent hold positions at the pinnacle of power in our society. So you can knock off the "Irish were slaves too" crap. It's not comparable. The Irish were seriously fucked over by the English, but they did comparatively well in the US.

@LeopoldBloom Irish were never slaves in America; at most they were indentured servants or apprentices.
@ChipmunkErnie Correct. Another reason why it’s ludicrous to compare them to Black people.
