When my mother had her first church secretary job in the late 70's, she had a "student preacher" that tried coming in with that whole jesus look for a youth pastor gig, the head preacher told him to cut his hair and shave his beard and moustache off, that he wasn't impressed with it.
@NativePortlander1970
Do you know if the student preacher cut his hair, shave his beard and moustache off ?

@LilMissAnonyMOUSE He did, his wife got a job as a sunday school teacher, and her little sister babysat us, and got mad at me when I snitched on her for smoking in our breezeway. For punishment she locked me in our garage, I was so mad I spray painted our pure white dog's head purple, I was nine years old at the time, the babysitter was 19, my Dad was not happy with her.
@LilMissAnonyMOUSE Well, it was really just a small spot on top of her head and part of her ear.
@NativePortlander1970
He did ! Actually, with my personality...I would have told the head preacher "No, thank you. I'd rather apply somewhere else and my look wasn't to impress him"...but that's me, of course. ☺
Your baby sister shouldn't have locked you in the garage, that was very immature and irresponsible of her. I hope it didn't cause you any trauma. At least you had the company of your dog...who got a cool, new look☺

@NativePortlander1970 Sorry, typographical error, I meant to type " Your baby sitter".The 70's was the hippie era and the guy probably had the same look as people his age, sporting long hair and all. Well, if he changed his appearance, he must have decided to make the change.
@LilMissAnonyMOUSE That's ok :)
I remember the 70's very well, over half the kids in my class had hippy parents, the other kids had fathers that were in Vietnam and were always being bullied by the hippy kids, some of the fights during recess got bad at times. My Dad was stationed in the Air Force stateside, so they largely left me alone, but there was another kid in my class that had the same name as me, a rare one, Dean, and he was super jealous he wasn't the only one in the school, so he'd pick fights with me by always sucker punching me in the gut, so I'd bloody his nose and split his lip, which would have him crying to the teacher and me in the principal's office for another lecture to leave it alone, and I'd tell him my Dad isn't raising a sissy boy, that he said I had his permission punch him back in the face.

Those were turbulent times. As a lover of peace, I believe in the saying, "There are no winners in war". This is not to say I don't appreciate the men and women who risk their lives to defend their country, I do... but when I think of war, I wonder how many of them were/are unnecessary and unjustified... because to defend ourselves when being attacked is logical but wars are generally started out of fearing their rival, for greed, hunger for power and control from Medieval times to the present, proof based on the earliest recorded history of man. Have we as humans, proud of possessing the highest intelligence on earth, lost the ability to talk things over, reach an understanding and honor one's word? It's sad to think we have, I would much rather believe there is a majority who haven't lost the ability and with them lies the hope for a world of peace. But this is just my humble opinion. I'm sorry you were bullied, a need to bully is never justified. Alas... it seems to me that some of us humans still need to work on attaining an essential level of spirituality and intelligence to reach a higher level of being, that I, too, am working on.
Well, NP....We seem to have delved deep down into a serious topic for a post that was meant to make people, at least, smile😊 but it is a good sharing of opinions about human behavior☺

@LilMissAnonyMOUSE As my Dad's Dad used to say, he was a WW II era Veteran, war is nothing more than young men dying over old men's squabbles.
I guess you can smile because even though he tried to bully me, I never let him get away with it, and he never learned to stop.

Your grandfather was spot on and figured it out ! Wise words, indeed.
You defended yourself to stop the attack but it's never a guarantee that it will change the aggressor's behavior...some just don't change, unfortunately.

@LilMissAnonyMOUSE The more we learn the less we actually know, the knowledge of this is the key to all wisdom.
That's how he summarized Socrates, who said that true wisdom is knowing that I know nothing. My Grandfather was also a lifelong student, he was always taking correspondence courses on subjects that interested him, he was wicked intelligent, even though he never disclosed his IQ, he was a member of Mensa when the organization still had prestige, had four patents to his name, numerous articles published in trade papers and journals, was trained in bomber mechanics during WWII, had degrees in residential architecture, electronics engineering, business management, and computer coding, computer science, and other things. He was also a serious hobbyist photographer and was the official one at the Monmouth Drag Strip in Monmouth, Oregon, near Salem, he was there almost every saturday during season from the 1950's to the 1970's, he was also a serious baker as well, commissioned to do elaborate wedding cakes, then do their photos, developing them in his own darkroom in his basement. He had many talents.

Socrates had a point, for only those who believe they know not everything are the ones who go out there and feed their hunger for knowledge. From the knowledge acquired, true wisdom is knowing right from wrong.
Your grandfather was what we call in my language, " Mente privilegiada"', a privileged mind His impressive credentials and talents are an example of a person born with a brain both technical and creative. He certainly lived a full life and deserved the recognition he got and a family rightly proud of all of his endeavors☺👍
