You know you're applying today's standards to a piece of art from 1974, right???
What we see and accept as abuse today wasn't even discussed in polite society back then. The general meaning behind the song is that he's about to lose the most important person in his life and he obviously doesn't want to lose him/her (I would have said "her" - but that doesn't fit right now that we know he is gay and has a husband).
There are quite a few songs from back then that would raise red flags now... but were seen in a different light at the time they were written.
Del Shannon's Kelly is literally about some dude screwing his best friend's wife. Cheating is wrong and bad - even back at the time it was written... but the way he describes his feelings towards her are something else.
