There used to be a fellow regular at baseball games, an Asian women, and a number of us wondered what exact ethnicity she was because it wasn't easily discernable. Someone finally asked her and she said Portuguese. Born in Macau, grew up in Hong Kong, and immigrated here. I called George, the regular usher, over. Think Morgan Freeman, with the ebony skin and gray hair. His parents immigrated from Cape Verde. I said, someone take a picture of us three Portagees. And in those days I had auburn hair and beard from my Welsh-English-Irish-German father's side, but my mother was 100% Azorean. Our ancestors travelled the world and truly blended in, marrying local folk where ever they settled.

@dancingtongue How did your Welsh-English-Irish-German father ever meet an Azorean? (and avoid Scots [c=666666]XXcontaminationXX[/c] reinforcement)

@Really My mother was the first in her family to go to college. She earned her teaching credential in 1929, at the onset of the Great Depression. The only job she could find was in this little one-room school in a mountain mining and ranching community, and then only if she brought two of her younger siblings so the school was assured of having enough students to qualify for state funding the entire year. The job came with a teacherage next door to the school, and the equivalent of a block to the general store. My father was running the general store at the time and was very helpful to the new school ma'rm, and then courted her.
