Be honest, after you watched Jaws for the first time, how long did it take before you went swimming again?

I was worried for a little bit, but I live in Australia and it gets too hot to worry about sharks.

I love swimming in the waves on Nantucket. No fear whatsoever. If I see a seal swimming by, I just get out of the water for a few minutes as they mosey down the beach.

You’re much more apt to get hurt by a wave than a shark. Lightning strike is much riskier, but I’ll still walk in the rain.

Chance of dying from a lightning strike:
1 in 79,746

Chance of dying from a shark attack:
1 in 3,748,068

In the US between 1959-2010 there were 1,970 lightning fatalities - shark bite fatalities, 26. Of those 26, 22 came from California (7), Florida (9) and Hawaii (6).

That’s 51 years of data. I’m 62 and doing just fine. 😉

@Adogslife In the town I grew up there was the odd shark attack each year at the beach popular with surfers. No fatalities. Since there was almost always an off duty Registered Nurse surfing out there too.

@Thevy29 Jaws was filmed in Nantucket ... or was it Martha's Vineyard? 🤔

I'm on the northern East Coast and we don't get shark attacks here. I think the water is too cold?

Glad to see that you get out of the water when you see a seal - they look cute but they can be dangerous.

@dontbekoi If there is a seal in Murat bay you don't go in the water. They only come in when they are trying to get away from sharks.

@dontbekoi Jaws was filmed on the Vineyard

It really is. I go there every year for at least a week. It’s a great place to decompress.
