How should I convince every cat that I'm their friend?

I just walk down the street and cats come to me. I've also been told by a once friend, when I walked into the apartment he was house sitting, this is the meanest cat and the cat just ran up to me and started rubbing my leg? I just petted the cat without knowing any of this.
