Anyone know how to receive assistance with assisted living and/or hospice in Massachusetts?

A good friend of mine is a Veteran, and is eligible for paid assisted living and rides to and from treatments for stage 3B lung cancer only if he lives farther than 50 miles away from the VA assisted living in Jamaica Plain, Boston, and he lives 36 miles away. He is presently receiving rides from the American Cancer Foundation volunteers.

He says he feels so awful already he can't deal with a 72 mile commute every single day, and he says even if he could, he can't stay alone at his own home.

He says he would refuse to stay at Jamaica Plain anyway, because the place is like a barracks and stinks of cigarette smoke.

He is no longer in treatment at the VA because of a malpractice issue, and is receiving treatment at Dana Farber in Boston.

He is confused, and is giving me conflicting information. He told me that if he received treatments 5 consecutive days, the American Cancer Foundation would put him up at a hotel and pay for it, so it sounded like he was all set.

Tonight he told me that he misheard the message on his answering machine, and they will NOT have a room for him in Boston, because there is a waiting list.

The nurse at Dana Farber told him that even if they did have a room, he would be so sick from the treatments he would not be able to stay there alone, and that he is going to need specialized care.

I am going to be doing some research on this tomorrow, and I will try to make some phone calls for him, but I would appreciate any recommendations about who to call.

In addition to his veterans benefits, he has Medicare and Blue Cross Blue Shield as a supplemental insurance.

All of you good and great souls who answered here have a part in what has happened... I know you do. Have you ever been humbled and shaken to know that God has heard all of your prayers?
He has heard.

I loved that moment in the movie Avatar when all the animals on Avatar suddenly join in the fight and the wife of the hero Jake Sully suddenly shouts, "Aiwah has heard you!!!!!!!!" That is how I feel. Jubilant and tearful.

That moment of joy shakes you to your core, somehow.

Everything is happening all at once, taking me from despair, where nothing was going right, to this realization of two months of prayer and work.

A lawyer is finally looking at my friends case. He arrived this morning and took my friends medical records. I arranged that for him through a reporter at the Boston Globe.

If the lawyer comes back and says the VA is at fault for medical malpractice, the Boston Globe reporter will write my friend's story, and it will become his memorial.

My friend was supposed to be kicked out of Spaulding Rehab on Thursday, tomorrow, because he was too weak from the chemo to perform PT and OT, and PT and OT improvement is a requirement to stay there. He had no place to go.

I called my former church and asked them for help with rides for my friend to and from chemo and radiation, and no one ever called him and no one has ever called me to let me know that no volunteers could be found.

The American Cancer society ran out of ride benefits, and there is a waiting list for hotel rooms near the hospitals in Boston.

I tried so hard to find him a place to stay where he could receive care, and I did get him in to Spaulding...till now.

But today...TODAY!!!!!!!

The social worker to whom I spoke two months ago came through for him. He has another bed in another rehab after he is forced to leave this one. She mentioned my name to my friend, and said she remembers speaking to me, and has been working ALL this time.

The lawyer showed up. He will look at the records. No promises, but he is not asking for any money, yet, either.

He found out from the same social worker that the VA is finally finally finally coming through for him with rides. He will be taken by ambulance to and from the chemo and and radiation treatments and the VA will PAY for all of it!!!!

Thank you...because it was you...all of you who added your voices in a song of prayer to God...a song of such beauty that He has heard you!!!!!
@4meAndyou Good at least some stress is off you guys and now he can get the treatments without the hassle.
