The way I see it… if things are already super distant between the two of you and have been for months now… I don’t think there needs to be a conversation to formally break up with them. Friends drift apart all the time, regardless of whether they ever decide to officially break off the friendship or not. You’re worried about a conversation that probably doesn’t even need to happen. I would say just try to live your life, just as they live theirs, and let time and distance do its thing.
Friendships come and go, but the memories last a lifetime. There's not really anything to be said, so I say keep moving forward.

It’s a weird situation but if they’re already talking less and less you can probably just match that and things will probably just fizzle out and be done
It might not give closure per so but there also won’t be any uncomfortable discussion to have

You could just let the friendship fade away naturally by not investing anymore effort. At some point they may reach back out to you. But you can invest your efforts in new friends yourself that reciprocate them.

Stop carrying your friend on your mind and get on with your own life...

you could just kind of let it auto ghost

they will have less and less contact and you can work on another friend

The best thing to do is face it head on and just have a conversation.
Do what is best for you
