Why is it that some people think they must compete?

I never understood why people do so much to people but be trying to compete

I do not understand that one either. I love sharing stories and experiences, but when doing so and a person takes it as a competition I shut down and walk away. I have no want to waste my time competing in a conversation when I am trying to share.
