I don't understand why people let money ruin a friendship

My brother had the greatest friendship with a guy we know since our childhood from our religion, but the friend once decided to not pay back for a pack of beer and naturally they stopped talking.

Similarly, I had a friend who refused to pay back the agreed upon amount after I let him crash drunk with me and my ex in her bedroom. If he would have come up to me and paid up the like the 10 bucks the day after, I would have had so much respect for the guy. If my friendship aint even worth 10 bucks, then I'mma outtie

If you have the opportunity to pay money for respect and friendship, then you'd be a fool to not do it! Some people dream of being able to do that on a regular basis.

My friends and I argue all the time about who's gonna pay because we all want to pay. At this point we don't even know who owes to whom and it doesn't matter either because we're always gonna be paying for each other randomly. I don't get how people don't have the basic decency to offer. And for a small amount of money of course I'd let it slide, but it's nice to know that at least the person you're close with isn't trying to take advantage of you.

@basilfawlty89 honestly my family has always let things like that slide just to keep good relations with everyone (which isn't even possible at the end of the day). Not just money, but any kind of help that they have seen ungrateful behaviour towards them afterwards. But yeah there's a saying that if you're stingy with money, you're also stingy with feelings.

I have lent a lot of money over my lifetime. Some never paid me back so they never got anymore from me. But we remained friends.
I understand where you are coming from, not paying back shows a lack of respect.
Is a friendship worth breaking apart for a small amount of money?

@Gusman No it's not, but they've shown how little respect they have, and it's somewhere below 10 bucks

Seems better to not give them anything else if they're not respectful...
Or gift them if it's not that much, but again better to not give anything ever again.
