So... there's this guy I text, we're just becoming friends

Once I had to deinstall that app die to technical issues, and he texts me elsewhere, "is this the end of our friendship?"
The other day we were talking on the phone but the connection was bad, and I could barely hear anything. So I tell him I am going to hang up and he asks, "does this mean this is the end of our friendship?"
Why does he ask this?
