Plátanos Fritos

I met a family from Santo Domingo, and they introduced me to the plantain, which is a very funny looking greenish brown banana looking thing that tastes a LOT like a potato with just a hint of banana flavor.

To make fried plantains, heat about 1/2" of oil until very hot. Peel the plantain and slice into pennies. Place carefully in the hot oil with tongs, and fry until light golden brown, then remove to a paper towel covered plate. With the bottom of a water glass, press each "penny" until it squishes at the edges and flattens. Return the pennies to the oil and continue frying until deep golden brown all over. Remove from the oil, pat dry with paper towels, salt, and serve. After the second frying, they should be slightly crisp and crunchy.

They taste very much like fried potatoes, but have that exotic flavor.

Thank you for telling me how to eat them! 😯We bought some thinking they were like regular bananas and had a hard time eating them.

@Peaches Yeah, they're a lot like potatoes. I have also seen them boiled, but I don't have a recipe for that.
