So someone today showed up on Teams with a smudge on his face and then he mumbled something about ashes and said he was catholic. What is that?

I was curious but did not want to ask further.

Today’s Ash Wednesday. I remember I used to fast, stop by church during my work break and a priest would place ash on my forehead as penance. Lent begins today. Yesterday was Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday), the last hurrah until Easter. It was always a big deal in my family, a Catholic thing.
Catholic Ramadan started... the "smudge" is a good way to find out who will likely be eating less for the next 40 days.

Mass is an Holy Obligation all week, too - so he is compelled to attend unless dead or dying... and a small handful of other medical reasons.

@HootyTheNightOwl when you say all week, like going to the church daily?
@BittersweetPotato Yes. Mass is held every evening.

Ash Wednesday or he was in a fire and didn’t have time to clean off.

@Captainjackass I thought he was in a fight to be honest!

@BittersweetPotato maybe he was. Nothing more brutal than a church brawl.

@bookerdana I think I am more familiar with copitc orthodox. They follow stricter lent rules. They strictly go vegan the entire 40 days!
