Pork Jowls

Before the 1980s salted pork Jowls were easy to find in almost all the stores. Now it's impossible to find except November and December and maybe January and only then in a handful of grocers if one is lucky.

Jowls are the best seasoning for leafy greens, all beans, stewed potatoes.

HEB has a product labeled slice Jowls and they are flavorless, more like bacon for frying. Authentic Jowls do not fry easy and do not boil easy. And they sell smoke jowls from a company, which is also flavorless, not even as good as any bacon.

Is there any place in Houston and I've searched quite a few that sells real salted pork Jowls that anyone knows of.

We have the same problem south of Houston and have to settle for salt pork.

@exexec that means it's definitely hard to find, salt pork used to have a bit of flavor 20 years ago, but now it's not worth buying you have to use the whole package for the slightest taste.

It might also be how things are cured now.
