OK, so my hearing is not what it used to be

I was in a drug store (Walgreens) and I heard an announcement over the loudspeaker.

"Customer service needed at the Baking Department."

Baking Department?
Is that the pretentious name they're now using for the shelf with the Hostess Twinkies?

A few minutes later the announcement was repeated.

Baby department.

Could be your hearing, or...

Could be the PA system, the announcer's voice, or other noise.

It's definitely more nuanced. Still, your hearing health matters.

I could never recognize what they are saying in those speakers whether at stores or trains. Always seems like just background noise.

Clearly, your mind associated "baby" with "bun in the oven", thus landing at "bakery", which was likely in the back of your mind already (I mean, come ON, how often is it NOT?).
