@SW-User That is unfortunately the state of health care in Canada as well as in the US and likely everywhere else. In third world countries, likely far, far worse. Colon surgery is still considered major surgery. He will stay in hospital until he can walk around, pass flatus or gas-this indicates that his bowels are back to working normally. Usually, if no complications, at least 3-5 days. He will have to be able to tolerate food and fluids again too. Possible problems include nausea, vomiting, cramps, pain (hopefully relieved with meds (that are constipating too), etc. He has to be able to move around comfortably too. That means doing laps around the floor. I hope he recovers well.

@PoetryNEmotion thank you so much for all that information that helps me have a rough timeline for when to possibly expect his return. he made it sound nearly outpatient, lol. but i work in the medical field (business admin), so i did realize it's major surgery. i hope he's making all his marks on recovery. he's pretty hardy and survived an appendectomy very well last year.
